Panamera; Porche or Puhleaze

November 28th, 2008 — 2:12pm

So this is Porche’s first recent effort at producing a four-door… We don’t actually consider the Cayman a Porche.  Well did they do good?  Does ceiling cat approve?  It has the right nose.  It has the right rear end. And it even has the right hips and D-piller.  But front engine?  Four bag trunk?  It comes with a 4.8-litre V-8… yes that’s right V-8, giving you 400 HP in stock trim and 500 HP in turbo trim.   They do have a 3.6-litre V6 option with 300 HP for the fuel conscious non-social conscious I’ma gonna drive a brand new car in this economic climate types.  There is also in the works a v6-electric hybrid.  If you are interested, you can read the press release here.

If you want more eye candy, take a look at this Panamera Gallery.

Foldable OLED

November 24th, 2008 — 9:06pm

Well, looks like Samsung has finnaly shownhere an actually foldable OLED sheet wrapped inside a boring cell phone.  This isn’t just some lets roll this sucker up promo but rather a full on fold in half OLED.  Now I have to ask, how could you use this as a desinger?  I also have to ask, how long will it be before we can vac form these OLED screens into any shape we want?  I for one can’t wait to vac form one as a mask and run Darth Maul facial tattoos across it.  What you have a better idea?

Samsung didn’t give much of a spec sheet with this one so it leads me to believe it will be a long time before we have it in our hands for use in design.  That is unless you are forunate enough to work for Samsung.

Test Drive Jeep

November 20th, 2008 — 7:35pm

Took a JEEP Comander for a long drive today.  Brand spankin new. 600km on the clock now sitting at over 800.  All in all I won’t be rushing out to buy one, but there was one little feature I think all cars should have.  If you tap the turn indicator, it actually flashes three times.  Nice little thing.

According to The Official Google Blog, Life magazines photo archive will be available on Google image search.

“Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We’re digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive — about 10 million photos.”

The Archive can be viewed at Life Magazine Image Archive.  As of the writing of this post images from the 1860’s to the 1970’s have been posted in 10 year groupings.  There is also, as expected from Google, a search box and basic links of interest, such as people, places, sports etc, available on the main page.  As to search terms, I guess standard Google practice applies.

As a design resource, this is amazing.  with a bit of time and a few button clicks you can get a visual history of how people truely lived, what they used and how the looked.  I know I for one will be scowering the images for design ideas, looks and themes.  The subject matter of the image is only half the story.  What is behind, under, around and near them is just as interesting to me.

Manky or Spanky?

November 18th, 2008 — 8:52pm
Manky or Spanky?

Manky or Spanky?

It’s official.  According to tampabay.com, “Interior decorating trends toward rich color, vintage look”.  Purple is back but towards the red hue, black on black beading, reds and oranges and lilac greys.  With less dye going in due to ecological concerns, colours are muted but vibrant splashes abound.

“How do these two mix? ‘We are drawn to old-culture decor — a Tuscan farmhouse kitchen — but we want state-of-the-art appliances in that kitchen. So we are drawn to both vintage hues and new bright colors,’ said Jamie Stephens, executive director of CMG.”

So you decide.  Manky or Spanky?  Will you be rushing out to redecorate in muted tones and bright contrasts or will you be sticking with what you have?  Is this the beginning of a trend, just a fad or old news to the cutting edge?
